PAPER MANIPULATION

WEEK 2 DAY 1

When experimenting with paper manipulation I delved further into the ideas of structure. Many of my ideas had been weak but I decided that I liked the sharp cut angles and how they could be folded into a rounder shape so many of my later designs are based upon this basic technique I attempted to master.

These are designed to replicate wings with a wide range and dangling tassel like structures. I feel that sometimes nature can inspire some great man made creations and I felt that wings would be quite a unique take on fashion.

This I felt was a strong composition with a basic design where black and white also clashed to a positive effect and the font on the shoulders gave a further needed twist to the design.

This is someone elses design interpretation using my paper manipulations and my mates white peper boat like paper manipulations. Creating our own designs using other peoples paper manipulations was an interesting idea. This technique also allowed for inspiration in that people look at design in individual ways that perhaps you would never do so yourself.

This is a design that was supposed to represent 'anger' with sharp shoulders, sharp neck brace design and sharp beginning of dress hip position. These tasks were carried out at speed not leaving much time for thought so you have to think quickly and at the time I thought the sharpness of this design made it represent anger well.

Again this is someone elses interpretation using my friends and my own paper manipulations.

Here this is a piece where the task was to focus on the design of the bum and I felt that this swirly paper manipulation provided an effect which looked strong with its twisting angles and the tracing paper almost looked ghostlike and this extended downwards like a dress. With the other papaer manipulations left I attempted to spice up the design on the upper back and shoulder blades of the manikin.

Again this is someone elses interpretation of my paper manipulation and what I have started to notice is that because they are quite long designs they have commonly been used as a wrap or belt to stretch across the body width of the manikin.

Here is our (me and my task partner) take on our paper manipulations. With this one I felt that the black/ white colour scheme was strong so we mainly focused on the white paper boat manipulations placing them in a swooping 's' like structure.

Here we have focused on my paper manipulations creating a 'v' structured neck to chest design with another wing of brown paper following on from the right sided length with some of the smaller white squared designs studding alonside it. The shoulders were covered by the spikey cone and leaf shapes.

REFLECTION

This was a very simple task but made easy through the methodical structure of how it was carried out which also I believe made it more enjoyable. At first I have to admit trying something new to me like fashion seemed like it would be hard and unenjoyable but the large room for creativity alongside its actual simplicity made it successful. I was pleased with my paper manipulations mainly the ones based on an eagle wing design but if I was to do this task again I definitely know that I would make a few changes to my paper manipulations potentially being more bold and 3D in structure. I've learnt that fashion isn't just a black and white topic as it is often stereotypically viewed as and actually have been quite inspired by how simplicity can make such interesting compositions.
